The reason to see this villa is the styling. Every room was designed for this house, and nothing in it came off a shelf: the furniture, the lighting and the colours were all made or mixed for it. The plan borrows from three places, the emptiness of a Japanese tea house, the low deep eaves of a Javanese limasan and the clean lines of 1950s mid century design, and the whole house is finished in limewash in a Moroccan palette.
The main room is one long space under a high timber roof. A sunken green lounge sits at its centre, with a teak kitchen and marble tops at one end, an onyx and copper dining table, rattan and chrome chairs, solid merbau floors and a brass sputnik light made in Java. Fourteen folding rattan panels open the whole side onto the 15.3 metre lap pool, and the doors at the far end are painted with the volcano they face.
Each bedroom has its own colour. The main suite is limewashed pink, with a canopy bed, a dressing room of rattan wardrobes and an ensuite open to the sky, its floor laid in hand painted tiles matched to the bougainvillea above it. The guest room is green, with blue and green patterned tiles in its ensuite. The third is warm sand with terracotta tiles and is set up as an office. You arrive through a round garden gate and hand carved doors showing the story of Rama and Sita.
It sits on 920 square metres in Pangkung Tibah, beside Kedungu, a couple of minutes from Batu Tampih beach, and can be bought with the 780 square metre parcel next door or without it. The seller prices all three options in rupiah.
The owner spent 25 years as a somatic movement educator, teaching how the body settles, rests and recovers, and designed the house with the same idea in mind. It follows the land and the views around it, so there is always somewhere calm to look, and crosswinds move through the rooms on their own.
From the kitchen you watch the palms move. From the office, a garden planted over the years brings sunbirds and butterflies to the window. In the evening, swallows and bats come down to drink from the pool.
The materials follow the same thinking. Hardwood floors are warm underfoot. Limewash plaster lets the walls breathe and softens sound and light. The colours stay gentle in the strong daylight and turn warm under the lamps at night.
That is the owner’s account of the design. The way to judge it is in person, late in the afternoon.
