What Uluwatu and the Bukit is actually like.

The Bukit is the limestone peninsula south of the airport, with Uluwatu at its southern tip.

The Bukit is a different island in practice: drier, higher, clifftop rather than beachfront in most places, and everything further apart than on the west coast. It sits in South Kuta, in Badung regency.

Ungasan is inland and elevated, mostly residential and villa development, close to the cliffs on both coasts without being on them. Balangan has cliffs, a well known beach and a surf break, and is quieter than Uluwatu. Uluwatu itself has the cliff hotels, the best known breaks and the most expensive land on the peninsula.

• Water. The Bukit sits on limestone with no rivers, so ask where the supply comes from, whether there is a well, and whether it has a licence
